Our religion the Sanathana Dharma

Our   religion the  Sanathana  Dharma (the  beginning less thought process)

By
P.R.Ramachander

Adhi Sankara   said  there  is only one  and  there is no two,
Saint Ramanuja said  if one surrenders  to another , there would be only one.
Saint Madhwa  said  one and one are  different   and   would be two,
And most  of  the people  could not understand  all these  differences

But their orthodox  followers said ,  that   they  would prefer  to do daily   rituals  ,
And    also  do homas  and  yagas     to  please   the devas   and Pithrys
AS told   to them   by the Vedas  and at the end travel to the feet of God,
And they expected  that  they would be    fed by   the  society   at large .

Some others    said   that  they   would  loose   themselves  and merge ,
In the God   by constantly   chanting      the names  of Gods   or Goddesses,
Or  meditating   on the  form of the   god  or goddess  and losing themselves,
And they expected   they would ultimately  reach the  God or Goddess

Some others said   that  by  Yoga   , the art  of merging  in God,
They would lift up  themselves   from the base   qualities  that control them,
Slowly and surely rise   themselves  in stages   and reach the ultimate ,
And open the  thousand petal lotus    and merge   with God .

But  our   great   religion   says    to us   again and again,
That   the path   to  our God    are   really  numerous  .
And   we  are  at  liberty   to follow   the path that  suits you,
And all  those  travellers  in different paths  would reach God

Ambitious nurture may become unwanted torture

Ambitious nurture may become  unwanted torture

( All middle class parents  want to make their son rich and they want him to get , all that they did not get. Some times  the children may feel that their father  is not bringing them up but  torturing them. I saw   a tamil post to this effect by my friend Meena Rajan. Thanks to her)

A  great writer     delaing with family  problems   got an e mail,
It was  written  by  a retired    school teacher  who had two sons,
One of them was  in USA   and the other   was  in Australia,
His problem    was lonliness as  he and his wife  were living alone.

His   wife   had rheumatism and he    had very severe chest  congestion,
And their    doctors adviced   them not to go and live   in those  two cold places,
Their sons were  not even coming to India  once   in two years ,
And even if they come , they  used to leave   within five days.

And in those   five days , they hardly spent  five hours   with parents,
And they told  , All the   time  our sons live  in India  , they  read your books,
Can you please  advice   our children   , how much their parents  are suffering .
WE do not want   anything from them but we want them to talk with us.”

I read  the e mail  again and  again   and forwarded   to their son,
And  within   a week, I got  a  reply   from him , explaining  his stand.
“I  have  lived in TRichy  with my parents ,    for twenty two years but  I do not have ,
Any attachment    with that   town  or   with my  parents.”

He continued ‘Possibly   even before  I was born  , my father  ,
Had decided  that I should   become  an engineer and possibly,
With that aim right   from LKG days   he   was teaching  me ,
All the twenty four hours and  mother also  taught us  some times.”

“I do not have  any memory  of my childhood  other than  studies,
I had to study on Sundays, during festivals and during vacations.
Nowadays   when I do not get sleep   , I some times   try to think,
Of my child hood days  and not even a joyful incidents pops in my mind.”

“I some times try to search even for   sad  incidents  so that I can,
Have mental contact   with my father , but I failed to find any.
My school was  worse  than my home as it was  a private convent.
WE would be watched  , taught  and punished , every minute we were in school.”

“I was not allowed to do anything but studies, no play  , no reading ,
And nothing whatsoever   and I was   made an expert  in learning ,
BY heart  all that in the book and vomiting them out   with great  efficiency,
In the tests  and in places   where  I was   asked   about  it.”

“Only  after  I completed  my graduate  in engineering   and reached,
USA , I came to know  that there  are many things   apart  from studies,
And  human life  was full of joy  , friendship   and relationship,
And my life changed and  I loved that life   and hated  my earlier life..”

“When I am come for a visit, within a day , I feel I am in an align town,
And want to get out  of that  hell  as soon as possible  but yes,
WE have  affection and  respect  to our parents but   to me,
They appear, yet another  two oldies  , whom   we did not know.”

“Durinng the twenty two years  I was with them  they have  not  ,
Talked   any thing except  our future   as well  as our studies and even now ,
All they want to know is our salary ,   savings   and warning  us,
Not to  spend money  , b not buy books   and not go to restaurentts.”

Please   tell us  , can we talk with those bores more than half  an hour.
However much acting   we may try to do , how   can  we talk to them.
How can we live in an alien town    with alien people   for  long.
WE try  our best  , more than five days    we cannot   stay with them .”

I forwarded  his reply to his parents   and they wrote to me ,
A sorrowful letter  blaming   their  son   as irresponsible,
Ungrateful  , inhuman , greatly selfish  and an idiot.”
And I wrote to them    a very short   letter   to make things clear.

“Childhood   is the time of joy , when games   have to be played ,
When festivals  have to be celebrated, when  harmless  chichat,
With friends   and relations to be done but   you   did not allow  ,
Them to have   the joy of childhood and they   would blame you for it.”

Truth Takes you near God

Truth Takes you  near  God

(Read it in face book.Supposed  to be from   the talk  of the great THiru muruga  Krupananda  Variar swamigal .He is well known to  his ability to tell great ideas  in simple words)

One sage  went  to a new town,
That   sage    had a  very great problem,
Because  he would take   meals  ,
Only in a  house where truth is spoken,

He    asked  the people   of the town ,
To show him a  man   who always spoke truth,
And they said that Ramu   a;lways  spoke truth,
And the sage  went to Ramu’s home.

Ramu welcomed    the sage in a hospitable way,
He fell at the sages feet, welcomed him,
And invited  him   for  food  but sage said,
“I would like  to know  more about you before that.”

He asked  Ramu, “How much wealth   are you having?”
Ramu said , “eighty thousand rupees   only.”
Saint  asked  Ramu, “How many  children do you have?’
He said , “Only one” and the  sage asked “how old  are you?”

Ramu said , “three years and   nine  months   only” and invited  sage for meals
The sage got   very angry and said, “ You are a liar and so I will not take your food.”
Ramu said ,. “ I never tell a  lie   and showed   his account book,
And there  it was   clearly written , he had  ten lac rupees.”

The sage shouted him , “Liar”  and Ramu said, “No sir , not at all”
“Out of the amount , I have spend  only  eighty  thousand in charities,
And I consider   that  only   the  money    spent  in charities  is mine,
For it would  be with me  now and also after  I die.”

The sage  said  “I would like   to see   your  son  “ and Ramu said,
“Four sons  were  born to me , but  I do have   only one son and ,
I will show him “ and then he  called “Hey  Nataraja  cpme here”
And they heard  a voice “I am bisy playing  cards and so I cannot come”

He  then called “Krishnaa”  and some  one   shouted “Fool keep quietr”
He then  called  “Govindaa” and one boy came out and threw a stone at him,
He then called  “HeyRamaswami”   and one boy came    and asked him,
Softy, “What can I do father?”  and Ramu said . “He is my son, others are not”

The sage asked “What  about your age?. You cannot  prove   that.”
Ramu said”Sir, I daily   spend only one and half hours  for praying God,
And the rest  on very many useless  things  and I  am sixty  five years now.
Till my fifth year I did  not pray God and so i have lived 3 years 9 months only.”

The sage   understood that  Ramu was a teller  of truth only ,
Because  he considered   what he gave as wealth ,
He considered  the   son who obeyed  him as his son,
And tome spent in service  of God as his sage  and took meals in his home.

The bluff of a cloth merchant

The  bluff of a cloth merchant

Translated by
P.R,Ramachander

My scholarly friend Vasu Iyengar   in post   has mentioned,
This  is  a poem written by a  Tamil poet  who sang this   to his wife,
When she  complained that the  colour  of the sari  which she  purchased,
From a  great cloth merchant faded.I enjoyed it .Hope you too  will.

The lies   told by the priest , the lies   told by the poets,
The lies learnt  by prostitutes  who are  desirous of money,
The lies told  by the goldsmith  without   any emotion ,
Are  not  even quarter of the bluffs told by   cloth merchant.

Please love your wife

Please  love your wife
BY
P.R.Ramachander

(based on Tamil write up of my face book friend  கங்கை சுந்தர் . Thanks to him)

Please  love your  wife , please  love her ,
She would travel a lot  and wait  you  ,
For a very long long   way , as she loves you,
And she would sacrifice  her all  for you.

Please  love your  wife , please  love her ,
She would ask your pardon and say sorry .
Even if    she   has  never  committed ,
Any mistake  , because she  loves you

Please  love your  wife , please  love her ,
Even when   she is hurt by your words ,
And she is in tears , she   would  show ,
Her smiling face  to you, because  she loves you

Please  love your  wife , please  love her ,
She would   always  pardon you  , in spite ,
Of your   shouting    at  her  off and on,
And see  that  her love to you is  never reduced

Please  love your  wife , please  love her ,
In an arguement   , she would tell you  ,
That she is wrong  and you are right,
So that you love her because she loves you

Please  love your  wife , please  love her ,
She   would  try to make   you happy,
By  making small  mischief  and feign,
She is a little fool, because   she loves  you

Please  love your  wife , please  love her ,
She would   try to hide   her sorrows ,
At times when you   are very joyful,
So that your joy is not spoiled because  she loves you

Please  love your  wife , please  love her ,
She would  never   think  of leaving you,
Inspite of   your ruffian  like behaviour.
Deeply hurts her because   she loves you.

Please  love your  wife , please  love her ,
She would respect   and love  all those,
In the circle  of your  friends and relatives,
So that you are never hurt because she loves you

Please  love your  wife , please  love her ,
She would understand your situations,
And accept your  explanations , even if ,
You  do not answer her calls , because she loves you

There  was  one rich crocodile farmer.
Who called   lots  of guests to his farm,
And announced , “to any one   who jumps,
In  this crocodile  tank   abd crosses  it,
I would give  a  reward  of ten lakh  rupees,
But if he   diesm his wife  will get five lakhs.”

Every one   seemed stunned  by that offer,
Suddenly  one man  fell  in the water ,
And greatly   scared, he sped  acroos the tank,
And crossed  it and with his ten lakh reward ,
He approached  his wife  and asked ,
“Why did    you  push me in?”  and calmly ,
She replied”Behind  every successful  man,
There  is wife , who forever  pushes him.”

Trayambakesawar temple

Trayambakesawar temple

Compiled by
P.R.Ramachander

This is one  of the important   temple among  the  Dwadasa  Jyothir  lingas of India .Adhi Sankara   wrote  about existence of 12  jyothir  lingas  :-

Sourashtre Somanadham, cha Sri Shaile Mallikarjunam,
Ujjayinyam Maha Kalam, Omkaram, amaleshwaram,
Paralyam Vaidyanatham, cha Dakinyam Bhimasankaram,
Sethubandhe thu Ramesam, Nagesam thu Darukavane,
Varanasyam thu Viswesam, Trayambakam Gouthami thate,
Himalaye thu Kedaram, Ghushmesam cha Shivalaye,
Ethani Jyothirlingani sayam pratha paden nara,
Saptha janma krutham papam smaranena vinasyathi.

The twelve Lingas of light are,
Somanatha in Sourashtra,
Mallikarjuna in Sri Shailam,
Mahakala in Ujjain,
Omkaram in Amaleshwara,
Vaidhyanatha in Parali,
Bhimasankara in South,
Rameshwara near the bridge in Sethu,
Nageswara in Daruka forest,
Visweswara in Varnasi,
Trayambakeshwara in the shores of Godavari,
Kedareshwara in Himalayas,
And Ghushmesha in Sivalaya.
He who remembers them ,
Morning and evening,
Would wash away sins ,
Committed in his seven births.

Among them   is  Trayambakeswara  temple  near Nasik. Adhi SAnkara   wrote    about this  Jyothir linga   as follows”:-
Sahyadri seershe vimale vasantham,
Godavari theera pavithra dese,
Yad darsanal pathakamasu nasam,
Prayathi tham Traimbaka meesa meede. 8

I meditate on the lord of Trayambaka,
Who lives on the peak of western ghats,
In the holy shores of river Godavari,
And who destroys all sins,
Of his devotees who see him.

Tryambakeshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines situated 30 km from Nasik in Maharashtra. Considered to be the birth place of the river Godavari, the shrine's beauty is still well intact .A small Shivalingam or Tryambaka(three faced one) , is placed amidst a spacious courtyard & the sanctum which is crowned with a graceful tower, a giant amalaka(goose berry) and a golden kalasha. The Shivalingam is situated in a depression on the floor of the sanctum. Continuous flow of water from the top of the Shivalingam adds to the mystic beauty. Shivalingam is generally covered with a silver mask which is then substituted with a golden mask with five faces on festive occasions. These faces have their respective golden crowns. While, the silver mask is similar to the processional images seen in South Indian temples.   The God  in this is a fusion of the TRimurthis with Lord Shiva   dominating them. Out of the top of the fused  Linga   water is always seen flowing.Since it  is difficult to see   it from outside  , a mirror is  kept   above the Linga  , so that  all  of can see   the water flowing  out of the top.

The  river Godavari  starts   from a spot on the top of the  Brahma giri mountain There is a story saying that it is  another  Ganges  river .It seems   Sage Gautama   had an Ashram in this area  and even when there   was a  huge famine   in the area  God Varuna  pleased with  the sage saved  this area from the famine. It seems he used to sow rice in the morning and harvest  it in the afternoon and daily evening distribute   the grains harvested   to the needy, One day a cow came and grazed his field and the enraged Gauthama threw a Durba grass at the cow anfd killed it. Since the cow  really   was a friend of Goddess parvathi  , she cursed him  and Gauthama  became friendless .When he realized that  bathing in Ganges was the only alternatrive  , he  consecrated  Lord Shiva there   and prayed him and the Lord  made Ganges flw over the hill (brahma giri)  ,Because of this the saint was absolved  of the sin of killing a cow.,

Shani Shinganapur Sani temple

Shani Shinganapur Sani temple

By
P.R.Ramachander
(By my good fortune I visited this great temple on 21-2-2018)

Sanaischara (Wrongly called as Saneeswara) is the slowest moving planet and takes two and a half years to cross one Rasi. People worship the planet so that the problems in their life when Lord Sani is travelling through certain Rasis does not affect them. There are no temples for Sani BHagwan in Kerala . In Tamil Nadu the most important is Thirunallar, where Lord Sani has a sub temple dedicated to him in a famous Shiva temple there. However in Karnataka there are several individual temples dedicated to Lord Sani. So is the case with Maharashtra and among them the most important is the Sani temple located in SAni Shinganapur. This temple attracts millions of devotees every year. The story of the temple is extremely interesting.
Sani Shinganapur was a small village mainly inhabited by Marathas who are descendents of king Shivaji, The village is also called Sani shingnapur or Shingnapur or Sonal.About 350 years ago this village had only 20-30 huts. At that time there was a flood in the river Panasnala ,It seems the pillar like idol of Lord Sani floated in the river and got settled in the village.Next day the cattle grazers saw a new black stone and they poked the stone with their stick. It seems blood came out of the stone(the scar can be even seen today) ,They informed the villagers who came abnd inspected it and were puzzled. That night, in a devotees dream that stone came and told him that he was Shani dev, who commanded him to move him from that spot to inside the village..Next day though all the villagers jointly tried they were not able to move the idol.Next day it seems God came and told them that he can be lifted only by any person of the village along with his maternal uncle and that he can be dragged only by black bulls. They were not able to fulfil this condition and decided to worship God Sani in that place itself..They tried to build a quadrangular platform but they were not able to lift or unearth the idol and so built a three feet platform around the idol, which is in the form of a black pillar. God Sani instructed his devotees through dream that he would like the sky to be his roof.He also told them that he would look after the security of the entire village and instructed them not to have any door or any lock .All these years the villagers have been following this , It seems a few minor theft have taken place but God has punished those thieves and they have returned the stolen articles themselves.
The shrine for Shani consists of a five and a half feet high black rock installed on an open-air platform, which symbolizes the god Shani. A Trishula (trident) is placed along the side of the image and a Nandi(bull) image is on the south side. In front are the small images of Shiva and Hanuman.Till a few month back males after bath wearing wet cloths were allowed to climb the platform and do Abhisheka with oil. Due to recent judgement of the Mumbai high court this practice has been stopped. The men and women are allowed to climb on the platform and see the idol.
Saturdays and Amvasya(new moon) days are special days in the temple. ShriShaneshchar Jayanti, the special day of God Shani’s birthday, is celebrated with great gusto and devotion.
Every year, from ‘Chaitra Shuddha Dashami’ to ‘Chaitrya Vadya Pratipada’, continuously, the chanting of God’s name and ‘Granthraj Dnyaneshwari Parayan’ is being performed. During this period, everyday, prayers are performed as follows
a) Early in the morning from 4 a.m. to 5 a.m. ‘Kakada Aart’.
b) 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. ‘Vishnu Sahastra naam’.
c) 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. ‘Dnyaneshwari Vaachan’.
d) 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. ‘Sangeet Bhajan’.
e) 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. ‘Pravachan’
f) 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. ‘ Haripaatha’ and
g) 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ‘Hari Keertan’ and ‘Jaagar’.

It would be interesting to know that UCO bank has opened a branch with always doors in the village. Another fact is that there is a police station in the village , where so far no crimes have been reported.
Yet another interesting fact is that there was a neem tree near the idol, whose branches got automatically broken when their shade falls on the God. Recently this neem tree was cut and a banyan tree is growing in its place . The famous sloka praising Lord Sani viz

Neelanjanasamaabhasam Ravi Putram Yamaagrajam
Chaaya Marthanda Sambhootam Tam Namaami Shanaiswaram

My salutations to God Saturn,
Who is the colour of blue- black,
Who is the son of Sun God,
Who is the elder brother of Yama,
And who is the offspring of Sun God and his wife Chaya .

Is continuously chanted in the temple.
